UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA HIT HARD BY SCOTT MORRISON’S CUTS
Reports that the University Of Tasmania (UTAS) is being forced to find savings of $30 million a year underscores the damaging impact of the Federal Liberal Government’s cuts to the university.
Federal Member for Bass Ross Hart said, “The Federal Liberal Government is responsible for gutting funding to UTAS - slashing around $58 million from the University last year.
“It is incredibly concerning that these cuts are now reportedly threatening the future viability of UTAS’ campuses in Launceston and Burnie.
“Tasmania’s Liberal Senators, who were responsible for the $58 million cut, must give an assurance that these campuses have a long term future in Launceston and Burnie.
“They must also immediately give an assurance that UTAS’ push for savings will not lead to staff cuts or course offerings being cut.”
Federal Member for Braddon Justine Keay said “It would be devastating for the North and North West regions if either of these campuses were forced to close because of the Federal Liberal cuts to universities.
“The Liberals only committed to new campuses in Launceston and Burnie after Labor first promised to fund these transformative projects before the 2016 Federal Election.
“We already know the Federal Liberal cuts will mean fewer bachelor degree places, so many people in these regions will miss out on university.
“Closing the campuses altogether would be a terrible outcome for Tasmanian students.
“In contrast to the Federal Liberals’ cuts to universities, Labor has a plan to invest in the University of Tasmania.
“Labor wants even more Tasmanians studying the bachelor degree they want, so they can get good jobs.”
